Meteora 'hovering in the air'
Tá metéora monastíra - the monasteries suspended in the air. The first settlement by monks took place in the 10th century. In the 16th century there were still 24 prosperous monasteries. Today, only six monasteries are inhabited, two with nuns and four with monks.
