Museum of Olympia

Statue of Nike
Greek goddess of victory

Statue from the Archaeological museum of Olympia

The statues left first.
A little later the trees, people, animals.
The land became entirely desert.
The wind blew.
Newspapers and thorns circled in the streets.
At dusk the lights went on by themselves.
A man came back alone,
looked around him,
took out his key,
stuck it in the ground
as though entrusting it to an underground hand
or as though planting a tree.
Then he climbed the marble stairs and gazed down at the city.
Cautiously, one by one, the statues returned.

Yannis Ritsos (1909 – 1991)
Translated by Edmund Keeley

  9. If a person must live in one place, I think you are fortunate to live where you live, Monika.

The photography is perfect, and the poetry "is a riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma; but perhaps there is a key."

  13. Great lighting for no flash. I always try & use the ISO settings for this arrangement but it often for me becomes a balance of sharpness & graininess. There is a secret message of hope in this post which I like.

    Liebe Gruesse!!!!

  25. Monika, what I miss the most are beautiful art museums. I miss to see interesting paintings and beautiful sculptures. The Greek Goddess of victory is beautiful and very impressive. Too sad that it wasn't preserved well.

These are wonderful pictures of these statures. You did a great job, my dear Monika. And I am glad to read more of Jannis Ritsos. I remember how I for the first time read this poet and found him very interesting and very profound.

    Hugs from Kaya.

  27. Monika, you have really captured the majesty and the fragility of these ancient statues, broken but not defeated - and the poem is magnificent - perfect complement of words and images.

  28. Monika!
I can't believe I get into your blog just stepping off from looking for images from Olympia. I clicked on one I was interested by and just appeared "The bitch is back", the blog your beloved daughter and beloved Petros best friend's Bianca mentioned several times!!! I've seen your blog before, but now I'm more than happy to be here again because it happened without any intention - I'm not a blog surfer - neither any other connection in the ocean of internet. I'm here writing you these just because it had to be! Maybe Ancient Gods knew I was in debt with you - I think your nice comments on my website's blog never get feedback from me - so they sent me to you to fix that!
Nex time we'll be in Athens with Petros, I'll ask Bianca (whom btw is a GREAT girl, love her, we share amazing memories and we use to laugh as if english would be our real language, not a screen among us) to make a date for dinner we all together!
    Cheers!
