Mani, the southern and middle peninsula of Peloponnese or Morea, straddling the districts of Lakonia

and Messinia in southern Greece, is a treasure of Byzantine and post-Byzantine churches, Frankish

castles and stunning scenery.

Μάνη, η νότια και κεντρική χερσόνησο της Πελοποννήσου (ή Μοριά), που καλύπτει

περιοχές της Λακωνίας και της Μεσσηνίας, είναι ένας θησαυρός από 

Βυζαντινές και μετα-βυζαντινές εκκλησιές, φράγκικα κάστρα και ένα μαγευτικό τοπίο.

Ναυάγιο ... Shipwreck

Κοντά στην πόλη Γύθειο βρίσκεται εδώ και περίπου 15 χρόνια το ναυάγιο ΔΗΜΗΤΡΙΟΣ.

Λένε πως το συγκεκριμένο πλοίο έκανε λαθρεμπόριο τσιγάρων από την Τουρκία προς Ιταλία.

Όταν έπεσε σε καταιγίδα, εγκαταλείφτηκε στην παραλία Σελινίτσα.

Near to Gythio, Mani, in a distance of 5 km on the beach of Selinitsa is found the

shipwreck Dimitrios.

The story says that is was one of the many boats that made smuggling cigarettes from 

Turkey to Italy.

It fell in a storm and was abandoned at the beach of Peloponnese.

Φθινόπωρο!

Καμιά άλλη εποχή δεν μας θυμίζει τόσο έντονα το πρόσκαιρο των πραγμάτων, όσο το φθινόπωρο.
Ανεξάρτητα από το πόσο μακρυά μπορεί να βρισκόμαστε από τη φύση,
η θέα ενός πεσμένου (ξερού) φύλλου μας υπενθυμίζει ότι τίποτε δεν κρατά για πολύ.
Κάθε τι που γενιέται είναι καταδικασμένο να φθαρεί.
Κι όμως, το φθινόπωρο φωτίζεται από μιά μυστηριώδη λάμψη.
Η οργιαστική ζωντάνια του καλοκαιριού τελείωσε, αφού η γοητεία της ομορφιάς δεν είναι παρά το όνειρο μερικών ημερών!
Το φθινόπωρο είναι μια πρόσκληση για περισυλλογή και καρτερικότητα, αλλά μπορεί και να ελαφρύνει την μελαγχολία μας
δίνοντάς μας λαμπερές εικόνες εκτυφλωτικής λιακάδας και ζεστασιάς. 

 

Autumn.

No other season reminds us as acutely of impermanence as autumn.

No matter how far removed we might be from the natural world,

the sight of a fallen leaf reminds us that nothing lasts for long.

Everything that is born is subject to decay.

And still, the fall is alight with a mysterious glow.

The exuberance of summer is over, for "beauty's charm is but a few days' dream".

Autumn invites reflection and forbearance but can also tickle our somber mood by

presenting us with a dazzling display of sunshine and warmth.

Die Schönheiten dieses Teiles von Griechenland kann man kaum in Worte fassen.

Darum hoffe ich, dass meine Fotografien einiges darüber aussagen!

I cannot put the beauty of this part of Greece into words.

So I hope that my photographs tell something about it!

Back from Mani

Μάνη,  η νοτιότερη περιοχή, στη μεσαία χερσόνησο της Πελοποννήσου, (ή του "Μωριά"), που περιλαμβάνει περιοχές της Λακωνίας και της Μεσσηνίας είναι μιά πολύτιμη συλλογή από βυζαντινές και μεταβυζαντικές εκκλησίες, φράγκικα κάστρα και εκπληκτική φυσική ομορφιά. Η απομόνωση της όμορφης περιοχής, συνδυασμένη με την ανεξάρτητη φύση των κατοίκων, σημαίνει ότι κάποιες παραδόσεις και έθιμα εξελίχθηκαν ξέχωρα και ανεξάρτητα από την υπόλοιπη Πελοπόννησο και Ελλάδα, έτσι που η ξεχωριστή αυτή κοινωνία σημάδεψε το μανιάτικο τοπίο. Από την περίοδο της κατοχής της Ελλάδας από την Οθωμανική αυτοκρατορία και μέχρι και σήμερα, η αρχιτεκτονική της περιοχής φημίζεται για τους πύργους της και τις ισχυρά προστατευμένες κατοικίες των μανιάτικων οικογενειών. 

 Mani, the southernmost and middle peninsula of the Peloponnese or Morea, straddling the districts of Lakonia and Messenia in southern Greece, is a treasure trove of Byzantine and post Byzantine churches, Frankish castles and stunning scenery.
The isolated aspect of this beautiful area, combined with the independent nature of its inhabitants meant that some traditions developed separately from the rest of the Peloponnese and Greece so that a distinct society made its mark on the landscape. To this day the architecture of the area is famed for the tower houses and fortified family dwellings from the period of the Ottoman occupation of Greece.

Can one describe the beauty of the landscape from Mani?  Hardly ....

Looking at my photographs, think about the dry heat in August, the noise of the cicadas

and the bright, dazzling light of Greece....!
