Glueck - happiness
Dies sagte Jesus, dies sagte Buddha, dies sagte Hegel.
Hermann Hesse.
The older I got and the more stale I found the small satisfactions I tasted in my life,
the more I realized, where I should have to look, to find the source of the joys of life.
I learned that, being loved is nothing.
But to love, everything!
And the more I thought to see why our existence is valuable and relishing does nothing
else than our feelings and sensibilities.
Happiness is love, nothing else!
A man who is capable of love is happy.
There is no duty of love.
There is only one duty of being happy.
Therefor we are in the world and with all duties and all moralities and rules, we make
each other rarely happy.
Because in this way you cannot make yourself happy.
A man to be good, can only be if he is happy.
If he has harmony in himself.
If he loves!
This was the teaching, the only doctrine in the world.
This said Jesus, this said Buddha, this said Hegel.
For each one is only the important thing in the world, his own inner self, his soul,
his ability to love.
If this is right, so one may eat millet or cake, wear rags or jewels.
The world can be heard purely with the soul.
It was good.
It was right (in order)!
This is a translation from Google and you might find a few not understandable

ReplyDeleteThis is beautiful, Monika. It shows a side of you that is truly wonderful. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteMonika, you know how I feel about Hesse, the master! But also how I feel about the weakness of translations...I have read all his works, but not in the original language. But I love this poem! Sometimes, with poems it is enough to read it out loud even if you don't understand the language, and the feelings come through, like music. When I read poetry especially, I always use the bilingual texts, so I can get the meaning on one side, and the music on the other! All the best to you, my dear.
ReplyDeleteMonika,
ReplyDeleteI will echo the dear Gabriella...Hesse is one of my favorites and Siddhartha is my favorite of his works. Your image along with this poem brings much to my mind. Very good thoughts, indeed!
I hope you are doing well, and I wish you a happy week. Take good care!
Hugs,
Brian
This is truly beautiful. I have always loved Hesse.

"Let it all be pain.
Let it all be suffering, let it be wretched-
But not this one sweet hour in the summer,
And not the fragrance of the red clover,
And not the deep tender pleasure
In my soul."

Ich verstehe, dass du diese Passage auswenig
kennst. In meinem Kopf "schwimmt" es von Hesse
Lyrik. Darum hat auch nichts anderes mehr Platz!

Magda.
Great post. This is deep and real. Too often we are concerned about the superficial things in life.

J-on-tour.
ReplyDeleteThank you.
You understand the meaning of this post!
Magda.
