Δρομέας - The runner... like liquid glass

After commission by the mayor of Athens, this remarkable work of art
was created by the renown Greek sculptor Costas Varotsos. Its construction lasted from 1988 till 1994.

The masterpiece was placed at the center of  Omonia Square. The name of the sculpture is
"Dromeas" (which means "Runner"). It was made with millions of glass slates (art glass) stacked on an iron pedestal.  It measured 8m. in height.
It stood in the middle of the square imposing and strong, surrounded by a fountain.
We, Athenians,  were proud of the beautiful "Runner", symbolizing
the Marathon event of Athens! Tourists, in summer, were happily swarming around the glass giant, some of them stepping into the fountain, in search of a refreshing dip!

Unfortunately as Omonia had to be excavated, for the new Athens Metro construction,
the glass masterpiece had to be moved elsewhere. Concerns about vibrations from the metro beneath,  it prompted city officials
to move it to its present location, in front of the Athens Hilton Hotel.

There it is now, in its second version.  It had to be rebuilt and is now 12m. high!
The runners of the Athens Classic Marathon passes and heavy city traffic is rushing by.

And we have our "Dromeas" back

  14. My preferences in art generally run along traditional lines -- classical Greek and Renaissance, for instance -- but the concept and the construction of this "Runner" are both fascinating and beautiful. Best of all, I think, it demonstrates a vivid imagination alive within the artist who created it as opposed to the all-to-usual blasé effort to simply be noticed among most Twentieth Century and contemporary artists.

And, congratulations, to the photographer, Monika, for producing a stunning series of a stunning work of art.

  16. Monika,

What a magnificent display and even more so, the story. As a long distance runner, your accounts of Athens mean a lot to me.

I think about you often - especially when I see news of Greece on the television, and I wonder how it is all effecting you. I hope you are well.

    Take care,
    Brian
